Product Spotlight: Poetry Choice Boards + Freebie!

April is National poetry month, so I’m out here trying to give us as many poetry resources as possible – cue poetry choice boards!

While my last post was designed to help us get familiar with different types of poetry, this post will highlight the perfect resource for students to actually APPLY THAT KNOWLEDGE!

This product spotlight is showcasing my 12 Month Poetry Choice Boards resource.

The Content

This resource features a choice board for every month of the year. For each month, students can choose from eight topics that have a connection to what is going on during that month and that time of year.

The eight options feature the poetry styles of: acrostic, limerick, sonnet, free verse, haiku, and concrete. I have also included options that focus on sensory details and personification.

This image shows one of the teacher display slides. This particular slide displays the structure of a Haiku and two Haiku examples.

Additionally, if students choose the “free choice” box, they can choose from all of the above or ballad, blank verse, and I am poetry.

There is one page for EACH POETRY TYPE that details the structure of that type of poetry as well as a completed example of it!

These are also included in an 8.5 x 11 that would be great for printing and posting in the classroom!

The Process

This image shows the four writing steps that are part of this poetry writing activity.

In my experience, it is crucial to be able to display instructions, guidelines, examples, etc for students while they are working on whatever activity or project we’re tackling. For this reason, this resource also includes teacher display slides that can be projected onto a white board or added to whatever learning management platform you use (Schoology, Google Classroom etc.)

The writing process is highlighted within this resource as well. Aside from the planning and drafting pages that students will use to write there poem, there is also a detailed rubric, guidelines, and language targets document.

In addition to this, if you want students to complete various types of poetry throughout the year, the resource includes a monthly tracking document too.

The Grading

In the above images, you can see that the resource contains a very detailed and objective rubric. This makes grading quick, effective, and informative for both the teacher, student, and family.

If this captures you’re interest but you’d like to try it out first, make sure to snag my Poetry Choice Board FREEBIE! This freebie contains TWO choice boards that showcase similar types of poetry but about completely different topics. So, if you grab the Freebie AND purchase the resource, you’d end up with 14 choice boards and 112 poetry writing options.

I can’t wait for your students to give these a go. I’m convinced it’ll show them that poetry doesn’t have to be as complicated as its often made out to be.

Happy creating 🙂
